Give me an ‘M’

In a recent U of M survey, nearly 90 percent of respondents instantly recognized the “block M” logo stands for the University. The new “M Libraries” corresponds with the introduction of “M Health” representing related schools and health organizations in the U’s Academic Health Center. Best of all, the new logo is more readily adaptable to the various media, e.g., print, web, and cellular display.

This year, Lisa Von Drasek, curator of the Libraries’ Children’s Literature Research Collection, was selected to join the prestigious panel of 15 experts in children’s literature to review over 2,000 books to find the 2017 honoree.

Blogging history

Buzzing phones, Facebook apps, and covert texting are just a few of the perils the university instructor of today faces. But Emmie Miller, a graduate student instructor in the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine exploited the new technologies to inspire her students by assigning historical texts as the basis for blog posts.

Among the first Westerners to set sail from Europe to East Asia were Jesuits Matteo Ricci and Alonso Sánchez. Although both claimed Francis Xavier as their inspiration, they clashed on how to engage with Chinese culture. The James Ford Bell Library has original copies of ​manuscripts​ by both men – witnesses to two very different stories.
