Meet us at the Fair!

Twin Cities Book Festival imageWhat could be better than visiting the Twin Cities Book Festival on a beautiful fall day? Nothing! So mark your calendar for Saturday, October 17, 10:00 to 5:00 p.m. to join us at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Curators from a number of archives and special collections will be on hand with facsimiles of treasures…please stop by our booth and say hello.

“You make my research easy!”

Rare book from the cavernsThis comment from a satisfied patron was recorded during another action-packed year for the busy Archives & Special Collections staff. Imagine this – over 15,000 people were served; 6,633 hours were spent answering reference questions; 322 classes were taught; and 42,773 items were retrieved from the caverns for use in the Reading Room!

Join us for October events

This fall, we're pleased to invite you to great line up of events at the Libraries!

  • On Sunday, October 11, Telling Queer History takes place at the Tretter Collection with featured storyteller Michael McConnell, who together with Jack Baker, was part of the first couple to apply for a same-sex marriage license in the United States.
  • The Great Fire cover imageOn October 21, Boston University Professor and journalist Lou Ureneck, will discuss his recently published book The Great Fire: One American’s Mission to Rescue Victims of the 20th Century’s First Genocide, and the research he conducted at the University Libraries’ YMCA Archives.
  • Later the evening of October 21, the Sherlock Holmes Collections hosts an annual meeting and public event featuring author Bonnie MacBird.

And those are just a few of our October offerings! Check the events section below for more.

Preserving Minnesota’s history

Philip Brunelle and Aaron Copland imageOne of the leading choral music ensembles in the country, VocalEssence, led by Artistic Director and founder Philip Brunelle, is the recipient of numerous awards and is a cherished Minnesota institution. Its records have been donated to the Libraries for safekeeping so that future generations of singers, composers, and music-lovers can tap this amazing resource for inspiration.

University Bindery ends 93 year run…

Rare book from the caverns…millions of books being salvaged from broken spines to brittle pages. Beginning in 1922, the bindery addressed the issues of heavily-used books but, as library materials are increasingly digital, demand has dwindled. And, as time marches on the Bindery closed it’s doors in early autumn. We salute the staff who have served long and well!
