‘For the Common Good’ explores how the Morrill Act defines U’s role

Armory

After the University was founded in 1851, a series of events including the University’s mounting debt, the financial panic in 1857, and the start of the Civil War undermined the establishment of its collegiate programs.

But following the Morrill Act being signed into law by President Lincoln in 1862, John S. Pillsbury championed the university’s quest to re-establish itself and fulfill its role as a land-grant institution by providing for areas of learning related to agriculture, mechanic arts, and military tactics.

Come learn about this turbulent time in the University’s history through a fascinating exhibit and explore the question of how the Morrill Act has continually defined the University’s role, “For the Common Good.”
