Frederick ManfredAnd finally, can you name the devices invented in 1947 by John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley that replaced vacuum tubes? If you answered "transistors" you might have been a contender at the ninth annual Science Quiz Bowl. 32 teams (128 students total) competed in a marathon eight-hour slug fest, with prizes supplied by corporate sponsor Imation. Pictured above is the winning team, "DNA."

Honoring Frederick Manfred's 100th Birthday

Frederick Manfred Minnesota writer Frederick Manfred started as a sports reporter for The Minneapolis Journal, was assistant campaign manager for Hubert Humphrey's mayoral bid of Minneapolis, and went on to become a prominent novelist.
