Celebrating our great students!
Want to know what students think about the Libraries? Check out the submissions to the first-ever Student Video Contest, sponsored by the Friends of the Libraries. Fourteen teams entered, representing 60 students! The winning team members will each be awarded an iPad at the Friends Annual Dinner. (Don't forget to buy your tickets now!)
But wait! There's more! The Friends also announced the annual Outstanding Library Student Employee awards—$250 scholarships to Artie Byron and Christine Avery for their stellar service.
And finally, can you name the devices invented in 1947 by John Bardeen,
Walter Brattain, and William Shockley that replaced vacuum tubes? If you answered "transistors" you might have been a contender at the ninth annual Science Quiz Bowl. 32 teams (128 students total) competed in a marathon eight-hour slug fest, with prizes supplied by corporate sponsor Imation. Pictured above is the winning team, "DNA."
Honoring Frederick Manfred's 100th Birthday
Minnesota writer Frederick Manfred started as a sports reporter for The Minneapolis Journal, was assistant campaign manager for Hubert Humphrey's mayoral bid of Minneapolis, and went on to become a prominent novelist. His papers, which reside in the Libraries' Archives & Special Collections, contain manuscripts, research material, galleys, proofs, photographs, and audio and video recordings. And, you’ll find a wealth of fascinating correspondence with the likes of Walt Disney, Eric Severeid, and Robert Penn Warren.
