Is there a MOOC in your future?

iPadUsing technology to support learning is nothing new. But harnessing it in a revolutionary new way was announced last week. A pilot test of five MOOCs—massive open online courses—will be available beginning in May 2013 from the University of Minnesota. Courses are free, openly available, and offer no credit.

Several Libraries staff are involved in the development and rollout of the new courses, working with faculty to identify open content and addressing some challenging copyright questions.

Check out the five courses—and also take a look at the broad offerings available from 62 universities across the country.

One exhibit—thousands of viewers

google search resultsDid you catch last spring’s exhibit "Bibliophia: Collecting Black Books" in Elmer L. Andersen Library? Perhaps you got a second opportunity to see it at the Hennepin County Gallery where it was featured during Black History Month. Or maybe you heard an 30-minute-long interview on Cities97 with exhibit co-curators, Cecily Marcus and Davu Seru.

A showcase for the Archie Givens Sr. Collection of African American Literature, the "Bibliophilia" exhibit has generated widespread interest both on campus and across the Twin Cities. Look for an online exhibit of the same name in the coming year!
